Boston’s CrossFit community grows

By Amy Hansen

Boston ranks in the top five per capita U.S. cities for gym memberships, but according to the Centers for Disease Control, nearly a quarter of the city’s adults are considered overweight or obese.

Extreme workout CrossFit is gaining popularity for people looking for something more interactive than a standard treadmill session. For many members, utilizing this sense of community could be the ticket to not only getting fit, but gaining friends.

Several CrossFit gyms (also known as “boxes”) have popped up throughout the Greater Boston area. The first CrossFit box, CrossFit Boston, opened up in 2005. Last year, fitness giant Reebok used a $150,000 loan from the Boston Local Development Corporation and chose the cities’ Back Bay neighborhood as the home for the company’s first box in the country.
