Boston had appeared on the worst American bike cities list of Bicycling Magazine. However, in 2007, Mayor Thomas Menino launched Boston Bikes, the citywide program that aims at transforming Boston into one of the best cities for cycling.
Boston is installing all kinds of bicycling infrastructure to fulfill its ambitious bike network plan, and also hosts community events and builds special community programs to expand ridership.
Roll it Forward, a community program conducted by Boston Bikes, collects, repairs, and distributes bikes mainly to low-income residents but also to schools, youth development organizations and other groups. It also provides bike education.
Boston is selected as one of six new U.S. cities to join the Green Lane Project, a two-year program that will assist Boston to build more protected bike lanes.
