Chants and cheers turn to comfort for the Golden Lion cheerleaders

By Felecia Bearden

University of Arkansas Pine Bluff Cheerleader Theo Johnson and his teammates find themselves surrounded by more than just cheers and chants. Instead, they consider themselves family when it comes to combatting issues outside the gym.

The team is made up of at least 20 members (10 males and 10 females). They cheer for both football and basketball season. The UAPB Spirit Team has done a few competitions in the past. In 2009, the team was featured on MTV’s Paul Abdul’s Rah! The team came in third place against schools Arizona State University and Miami University of Ohio.

The team is also known for its hip-hop style dance moves and compelling pyramids. But for head coach Karen Blunt and assistant coach Leroy Brown, those piling high pyramids are no match for the enthusiasm and eagerness found on those black and gold mats.
